Beijing, Distinguished Professor of Linguistics, in the School of Foreign Languages, Hunan University, Guest Professor at Beijing Science and Technology University, and Honorary Professor at the Australian National University. Before this, he was Chair Professor, Department of English, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, and Professor in the Linguistics Department of Macquarie University. Professor Matthiessen has worked in areas as diverse as language typology, linguistics and computing, grammatical descriptions of various languages, grammar and discourse, healthcare communication studies, functional grammar for English-language teachers, text analysis and translation, multisemiotic studies, and the evolution of language. He has supervised over 40 research students.

This volume offers brief and engaging introductions to research methods in linguistics in general. The first part focuses on the key concepts in research methods and the second part on different kinds of research output. Material is presented in the form of mini-lectures, with topics being discussed in a simple and reader-friendly way. The intended readers of the book include researchers and academics that work on general linguistics and language sciences or related areas as well as MA or doctoral students that have some basic knowledge about linguistics.
In addition to introducing research methods in linguistics in general and discussing some key concepts in linguistic research the book also guides readers in producing the output of linguistic research, helps them to select topics in doing linguistic research, illustrates how research methods work in linguistic research and documents and summarizes Christian M.I.M.
