The series is about the nature, the functions and the structure of human language seen from a number of points of view within the framework of contemporary scientific thought. It covers about 35 years of work by one of the world’s leading scholars in the field, Prof. Christian M.I.M. Matthiessen.
The series of volumes in the Collected Works of Christian M.I.M. Matthiessen are organized into a number of distinct topics. However, they all reinforce each other, and together constitute a coherent, body of theoretical and descriptive work.
Each volume consists of a series of chapters written by Matthiessen with few co-authored chapters that are included so as to present Matthiessen’s whole intellectual enterprise. Each volume also contains at least one new article written specifically for each of volume. These reinforce the insights presented in each volume and further updates the cutting edge nature of the collective works.
Christian Matthiessen taught and held visiting positions at various universities and research institutes in Australia, Germany, Japan, China, the U.S. and Hong Kong. He is currently Chair Professor in Language Science at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University.
