Frequently Asked Questions by Journal Contributors
Why Equinox?
Equinox is an independent company based in the U.K. publishing academic books and journals to the highest international standards. Learn more about us here.
Equinox is committed to publishing cutting edge scholarship in a range of publishing formats and genres, from book reviews to multi-volume reference works. Journals have been part of our portfolio since our foundation in 2003, and we greatly value our relationships with our journal contributors. We are proud of having started a number of new journals during our nearly 20 years of publishing. In comparison with many journal publishers, we are relatively small – with only around 50 journals – but we handle our customer service and subscription management in-house, instead of placing these functions with third-party suppliers. This gives us flexibility and accountability and we offer a similar, refreshingly personal service when it comes to copyediting and typesetting.
We developed and maintain our own online hosting site which allows us to make updates and changes rapidly to enhance worldwide discoverability of your article. These include up-to-date reference-resolving technologies such as Serials Solutions, indexing by top search engines, submission to content aggregators (such as EBSCO and ProQuest), and indexing and abstracting services; user alerting functions such as electronic Tables of Contents alerts and RSS feeds; and a commitment to long-term preservation of content through our participation in Portico.
We market our journals internationally and we encourage journal contributors to get in contact and make suggestions to improve our marketing activities.( Click here to see our current conference/event list.) We understand your subject area and are actively publishing books as well as journals for the same audience.

How to Submit an Article to a Journal?
Go to the For Authors tab at the top of the homepage of the journal where you want to publish. All submissions should be made through the online submission system that can be found there. If you are unable to make an online submission, please contact Daniel Gronow ([email protected]) for assistance with journals in linguistics or archaeology/history or Declan McCarthy ([email protected]) for help with journals in religion or music.
Peer Review/ Status of My Article?
Once your article has been uploaded through the online submission system, you will receive an email acknowledging that your paper has been uploaded. The editor then needs to make a decision whether to take the review process forward or not. You will be able to log-in and check the status of the article’s progress i.e. the system will indicate if the article has been sent out for anonymous review. If your paper is rejected, you will receive notification from the editor as soon as this decision has been made. If your paper has been sent out for peer review, the time it takes for this process to be completed does depend on the schedules of those performing the peer review and normally takes at least 8 weeks.
With the exception of Bulletin for the Study of Religion, all of our journals publish only peer-reviewed material which has been subject to double-blind peer review. The Bulletin publishes peer-reviewed articles but also has traditionally commissioned ‘overview’, ‘opinion’ and ‘survey’ articles alongside interviews and other shorter pieces of more general interest to a broad readership in the field of religious studies.

Statement of Ethical Practice
Equinox Publishing is a leading publisher specialising in books and journals in the humanities, social sciences and performing arts. We recognise and believe in the integrity of good ethical practice in publishing in order to promote and maintain the quality our contributors produce. As a publisher, we uphold the standards set forth in the code of practice promulgated by the Committee on Publication Ethics specifically for all contributing parties: author, editor, reviewer and as publisher.
We have communicated these standards to our journal editors who share in our aims for ethical publishing practice and agree to work towards these standards throughout the editorial process. Together, we ensure the ongoing excellence and quality for which Equinox is recognised.
