 What Is IGALA?

The International Gender and Language Association was established in 1999. A development of the graduate-student-run Berkeley Women and Language Group, IGALA is an international interdisciplinary organization that is committed to the promotion and support of research on language, gender, and sexuality. Membership includes a subscription to Gender and Language as well as other benefits:

IGALA Conferences

IGALA organizes biennial conferences. Please click here for details on the next/previous conference. Please also watch out for announcements via the GALA-L list and Facebook.

We will be inviting proposals from members (to be presented at the next conference) for hosting the next/future IGALA conferences. We strongly encourage members to consider hosting a conference, and look forward to your ideas!

In order to present a paper (including posters, panels, etc.) at the IGALA biannual conference, you must have a current IGALA membership (after having submitted a paper and having it successfully accepted according to the guidelines of the conference organising committee). In cases where abstract submission and presentation fall in different calendar years, you will need to be a paid up member for the calendar year in which the presentation falls.

How to Join/Renew IGALA Membership

You can join IGALA or renew your membership here. You can also update your personal profile at any time.

Society membership runs on a calendar year from January to December. This journal is provided as part of your membership and you will receive all issues of the one volume which is active during your membership year, even if it is published after 31st December.

In order to keep clear records of your membership, and to maintain a continuous, unbroken subscription, we ask that you renew for the next year from the beginning of November when we send out renewal reminders. If you take out a subscription before November, your payment will be applied to the current years membership unless you already have a subscription or have specifically requested the forthcoming year.

Please note that you may require yearly membership proof in order to use the various services provided by the society including attending society conferences. You can use the confirmation email received from Equinox when you take out a subscription.

Membership and Journal Print Subscriptions

IGALA membership runs on a calendar year but, at whatever point you join, you will be sent any print back issues that have already been published that year. Your subscription will complete with the publication of issue 4 of that year’s volume, regardless of when you join.
