Description

This chapter discusses the variation of language, with reference to synchronic variation, sociolinguistics and speech communities. It further discusses 'dialect', as a variety of language, and 'diglossia'. Moreover, the notion of 'sociolect' is described, as well as lexical, sound, and morphosyntactic variations.
