Description
Hermeneutics, here defined in the broadest possible sense as the methods and considerations governing textual interpretation, have become a contentious issue in the field of Qurʾānic interpretation. This chapter discusses a variety of methodological questions that fundamentally determine the nature and possible results of any exegetical enterprise, from semantics to chronology, from literary readings to the quest for structural coherence within the Qurʾān. The role of science and the so-called scientific ‘miracle of the Qurʾān’ receive special attention. Finally, the chapter examines attitudes towards both the use and the avoidance of the prophetic tradition.
