Hugh Willmott is Senior Lecturer in European Historical Archaeology at the University of Sheffield.
Description
Whilst the majority of the former religious properties were acquired by private individuals, a significant proportion of monastic buildings were retained or adapted for communal use. Many monastic churches continued, in part, to operate as places of worship, and in towns elements of the monastic estate were adapted to serve as schools, alms houses, company halls and even industrial complexes.
