Description
The Chilam Balam of Chumayel is one of a number of Chilam Balam texts of the Maya of the Yucatán peninsula, named after the semi-mythical “jaguar priest.” These were written in the Maya language in Latin script between the 16th and 18th centuries CE. They include a mix of discussions of history, calendrics, ritual, cosmogonies, medicine, philosophy, and other cultural information, including accounts of the generation of humanity and the characteristic activities of humans, tied to a correlative metaphysical system to contextualize all aspects of the world.
